Words of Europe: in Rome students share their vision for the future
This week two meeting were held in Rome as part of "Words of Europe", a project supported by the European Commission through the CERV program.
"Words of Europe" aims to gather ideas and perspectives from citizens across Europe to create a shared vision for the future of the continent. On January 25th, at Arci Solidarietà's headquarters, the second Roman meeting of the project brought together over 30 individuals, divided in four working groups, including a group of young students from the Liceo Dante Alighieri in Rome. Using the World Café and "Dialogues on the Future" methodologies, the participants discussed ideas and perspectives to shape the future of Europe.
Four new words emerged from the meeting: "human rights," "education," "involvement," and "intersectionality." These words will be added to the eight words that emerged from the first two events, creating a total of 12 key words to guide the vision of an ideal Europe. The discussions were recorded by Radio Zai.net, the podcast is available here.
On January 26th, a third Roman Words Of Europe meeting was held for fourth and fifth grade students at Liceo Tasso in Rome: the event aimed to give young students an opportunity to express their ideas about the future of the EU, and to encourage active participation in the project.
The meeting was organized by Arci Solidarietà and Mandragola and consisted of several activities. The first part of the meeting was an introduction to the "Words of Europe" project, providing basic information about the history of European integration and the functioning of EU institutions, while the second part of the meeting consisted of working groups, using the "World Café" and "Dialogs on the Future" methodologies. The groups were moderated by Arci Solidarietà operators to facilitate the sharing of ideas and participation of all students.
The groups began with reading a narrative prologue to project the participants into an ideal future scenario. Each participant was given a cardboard star to write the word they deemed the most important to represent this ideal future of Europe. The group then discussed content, imagery, and proposals, and chose four words to bring to the plenary assembly.
The groups then shared their key words and the discussion they had in the plenary assembly, and identified the four final words of the meeting from those that emerged in the previous phase: "communication", "utopia", "humanitas" and "integration".
Overall, these events were a success in introducing local youth to the EU and encouraging active participation in "Words of Europe", marking the final event of the first part of the project. The students were invited to be active participants in future meetings and to contribute to the design of the participation model and animate the "Words of Europe" journey until 2024. Through these three events, individuals have come together to shape a vision for the future of Europe, one that prioritizes human rights, education, involvement, and intersectionality. The project is an important step towards creating a Europe that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
