This morning, the Words of Europe project hosted a transnational online workshop, "False Myths about the EU," to dissect prevalent misconceptions and explore avenues for enhancing critical thinking and media literacy skills. The meeting brought together participants from diverse backgrounds, including representatives of NGOs, youth workers, trainers, project managers, and individuals keen on understanding the intricacies of the European Union.

Deconstructing Common Myths

Participants were divided into groups to scrutinize specific myths. One group tackled the belief that Germany and France exclusively lead the EU and make all decisions. The discussions within this group revealed insightful perspectives on the dynamics of EU decision-making.While acknowledging Germany and France's significant influence, the group emphasized that decision-making within the EU is a collaborative process involving multiple member states. The EU functions as a supranational entity, and decisions are made through cooperation and consensus among member states.

Diverse Perspectives: voices from the workshop

Petra, offering a Hungarian perspective, highlighted how political narratives in her country often depict the West, particularly Brussels, as the sole decision-maker. Anita echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the prevailing narrative in Hungary against Germany and France, attributing more power to Western countries. Diletta, from Italian Arci Solidarietà, underscored the importance of dispelling stereotypes and recognizing the power dynamics within the EU. Luca emphasized that while major players like Germany and France wield influence, decisions are made through negotiation and consensus-building.

Education and Critical Thinking: key components

Participants stressed the pivotal role of education in dispelling false news, emphasizing the need to address stereotypes about countries and institutions. The consensus emerged that media literacy is essential, especially for newer generations, to foster critical thinking and challenge generalized narratives.
